The major advances in research and development of advanced medicines in the ATMP field have the potential to treat and cure diseases in a way that has not been possible with traditional medicines and treatments.
The major advances in research and development of advanced medicines in the ATMP field have the potential to treat and cure diseases in a way that has not been possible with traditional medicines and treatments.
Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) are biological medicines based on cells, tissues and genes. Treatment with ATMPs can be a one-off treatment with the expectation of a lasting effect, and in other cases create pronounced opportunities for long-term survival for some cancer patients where all other treatment options have been exhausted. They can also provide treatment options for patients with hereditary diseases where there are currently no effective treatment options.

Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital are together among the leaders in research, manufacturing and treatment with ATMP in Europe. The collaboration on cell and gene therapies has a long tradition and in 1975 the Unit for Cell Therapy and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation was founded.
In 2023, they joined forces in an initiative to strengthen their focus on cell, gene and tissue therapies by establishing a new joint center.
ATMP Flemingsberg is a dynamic and interdisciplinary place where collaboration between hospitals, academia and industry continues to flourish, resulting in groundbreaking advances in Swedish cell and gene therapy.
Campus Flemingsberg has grown to accommodate almost 20,000 students and has become a versatile knowledge center. The geographical proximity between academies and hospitals has created unique conditions for life science companies to establish themselves in the area. Close cooperation and exchange of knowledge and innovation has created a dynamic environment and positioned Flemingsberg as one of the leading destinations in the life science sector.
